Landscape Oil on Canvas, Lieven Herremans
This Landscape Oil on Canvas, Lieven Herremans, (Belgium,1858-1907), is in Excellent Condition. Lieven Herremans was born in Bruges, Belgium in 1858 and died in Ixelles in 1907 at the age of 49. Ixelles was the birthplace of world renowned sculptor, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). Known for his genre paintings and landscapes, Herremans also painted portraits, interiors, and marinescapes. In addition to working with oil paints, Herremans also enjoyed using pastels as his medium. The oil on canvas, "Landscape", is typical of Belgian countryside paintings of the late 19th century. A sprawling vista in varying shades of green is combined with a traditional Dutch country building (complete with terra cotta roof) and a small gathering of friends perched under a colorful umbrella. Lieven Herremans has rendered a painting of "pastoraal" quality (Dutch for "pastoral"). The adjective as used when referring to "pastoral art" applies to rural subjects such as villages or often herdsman, which are romanticized in brushstrokes. The artist has included in this scenario a group of individuals who easily enjoy the beauty of nature and its bountiful and colorful glory outside. The color palette used by Herremans ranges dramatically from dark evergreens to Kelly green to soft sage in his overall depiction of the countryside. The artist also employs a rich yellow-orange and cerulean blue stripe in the fabric of the umbrella. Flowers abound in the painting's view in shades of cranberry, rust and red and differing shades of cobalt blue. The composition ends with a fanciful mix of shades of grey, azure blue and light mauve in a late afternoon sky. Measuring Framed is 30 1/2" x 40 3/4", Canvas alone 31 1/2 X 21", Serious Inquiries are Welcome!
