| This Oil on Canvas "Chalets in an Alpine Landscape", Josef Thoma, Austrian (1828-1899). Known for his large and dramatic mountainous landscapes. Thoma used a sensitive palette and a painstaking degree of detail. This example dates to around 1850 and depicts an expansive scene in Austrian Alps full of dwellings and people. He is the son of an artist by the same name and studied with his father until a young man. He enrolled in the prestigious Viennese Academy and was tutored in the skill required to be a realist landscape painter. His paintings can be seen today in the Municipal Museum of Vienna.
