| This Superb Portrait of a Lady in a Lace Blouse, American School is in Excellent Condition. Limner is derived from a Latin word that means to draw or paint on a surface, the term in American art is applied to self-taught, often itinerant artists of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The style of stark lines and stiff forms of limner painting are a true window into the world view of 18th century America. American artist learned their skills from other American painters rather than study in the European Academy system. While Europeans were demanding idealistic portraits, puritanical Americans preferred unerring realism. Due to sporadic training most limner portraitists found it problematic to correctly render anatomy and volume or space. They did however, have sharp skills in working with decorative patterns, color, and often depicted personal items cherished by the sitter. This gives viewers today a sense of what these people felt were important in their lives. This painting depicts a surprisingly attractive young woman, painted with a skill in handling anatomy rarely found in this type of painting. Her clothing and hair ornament are telling attributes of a well to do middle class family. The frame is mahogany and original to the painting. Measuring 33” W x 38” H overall it is a Fabulous addition to any collection. Please view and zoom all pictures, serious inquiries are welcome! | |||||||||||
